Dr. William Riley Bonds, prominent Double Springs physician before retiring ten years ago, died Dec. 25 [1945] at 4:10 a.m. at his home in Winfield after an illness of several weeks.
He would have been 83 years old in February. Dr. Bonds had been ill for 18 months, spending most of that time in hospitals in Birmingham and Jasper and Mayo's Clinic, Rochester, Minn., from where he returned six weeks ago. He was in a serious condition two months prior to his death.
Born in Lawrenceville, Ga., he moved closer to Double Springs at the age of nine, where he resided until moving to Winfield three years ago.
He finished medical school at Mobile at the age of 31 and practiced in Winston for 51 years, retiring ten years ago on account of ill health. He married Miss Ada I. Baird of Double Springs on Dec. 13, 1894.
Dr. Bonds always tried to help in the betterment of the community. He was a principal stockholder in the Traders and Farmers Bank at Haleyville, a Mason, and a member of the Missionary Baptist Church at Double Springs.

On Thursday before his death, Dr. Bonds received a message from the War Department verifying the death of his son, Woodrow M. Bonds, U.S. Navy, who had been missing almost four years.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, Dec. 26, at 2 p.m. at Fairview Church with the Rev. Dewey Wallace of Winfield and the Rev. J.M. Burns of Haleyville officiating. Interment was in the adjoining cemetery with Kilgore Funeral Home of Winfield directing.
