He partnered with Francis W Chaffee to build the Carthage Opera House for $10,000, opening 28 February 1878, with The Carthage Light Guard. It had 18 foot ceilings with four chandliers, designed to seat 900, closing 31 December 1893 because the new opera house at 4th & Lincoln hurt its business. It was above R H Rose's business on south side of square, now, 136 east Fourth street. (building currently For Sale, October 2011)
Had no issues but adopted child, Violet Maude Thompson on 4 February 1875, changed her name to Bessie Burlingame, who died by an accident in 1891. Note: Tragedy struck the Thompson family in late 1874/ early 1875 and the family split up. Probably mother,Ann, died. father, Benjamin, signed Violet's adoption papers. Violet had two older brothers and a sister.
