JOHN DIETRICH MORAREND PASSES AWAY.
On Wednesday evening, January 31, 1917, at 8 o'clock, at the home of his son, Henry Morarend, in Jefferson township, occurred the death of John Dietrich Morarend, a pioneer resident of Clayton County, the cause of his death being old age. Deceased was born in Hanover, Germany, on June 14, 1832, and therefore was 84 years, 7 months and 17 days of age at the time of his death. In the year 1850 he came to America, settling at first at Cincinnati, Ohio, and later coming to Jefferson township, Clayton County, Iowa, where he was successfully engaged in farming for many years, later coming to Guttenberg to reside, where he lived until about a year ago, when he went to the home of his son Henry in Jefferson township to spend the remainder of his life. He was an industrious and honest man during his entire life. He is survived by his wife, four sons, Henry, William, August and John, of Jefferson township, four daughters, Mrs. Peter Burr, of Stratford, Wis., Mrs. Peter Noack, of Jefferson township, Mrs. John Moser and Mrs. Robert Hansel, of Mallory township, a number of grandchildren, and a large number of other relatives and friends by whom he will be sadly missed. Five children have preceded him in death. Funeral services will be held at the Henry Morarend home in Jefferson township on Saturday afternoon. Interment will be made in the City Cemetery. Rev. K. Wm. Barun, of Garnavillo, will conduct funeral services.

Dietrich and Dorothea Schroeder Morarend:
John (Dietrich) Morarend b. June 14, 1832, in Hanover, Germany. Dietrich came to the U.S.A. in 1850 settling in Cincinnati, Ohio. Later came to Iowa to Jefferson Twp., Sec. 18, and were farmers there.
He m. Dorothea Schroeder in 1858 in Guttenberg. Dorothea b. March 1, 1840, at Mechlenberg, Germany, to Mr. and Mrs. Fred Schroeder. The family came to U.S.A. in 1854 locating on a farm near Guttenberg on Minera Creek.
They were the parents of 13 children: Johann b. 1858, d. 1860; Ida m. Theo. Emanuel Bittner; Fredrich b. 1863, d. 1863; Henry; Wm.; Gustav b. 1868, d. 1870; August; Herman b. 1882, d. 1884; John D.; Clara m. Peter Burr and lived at Stratford, Wis.; Laura m. P. A. Noack; Elizabeth m. John R. Moser; Alvina m. Robert Hansel.
Dietrich and Dorothea retired to Guttenberg for about a year. Then Dietrich went to the home of his son, Henry, near Osterdock where he died Jan. 31, 1917, of old age. The Rev. K. Wm. Grauu of Garnavillo held the service on the farm.
Later Dorothea made her home with son Wm. west of Guttenberg, Ia. She d. Jan. 22, 1925, and services were conducted by Rev. E. Lehne at the Wm. Morarend home. They are buried in city cemetery, Guttenberg.
