Dr. Patton was born in Birmingham, Alabama in 1923, the son of Ira and Clara Patton. He married on April 9, 1944 (Easter) to Darlene Franklin, licensed Pharmacist and former Miss Howard College. He was a long-time physician residing and practicing in Oneonta, Alabama (Blount County) for 50+ years. He attended Woodlawn High School where he was a member of the National Honor Society; Omicron Delta Honor Society; Varsity Debating Team; and Class Orator. He attended Howard College (now Sanford University), receiving an A.B. Degree in 1944. He was elected to Trident Men's Scholastic and Leadership Fraternity, was three times President ABD - Honorary Pre-Medical Fraternity,
Instructor, Comparative Anatomy Lab and Lecturer, Comparative Anatomy. In 1943 he entered The University of Alabama, Medical College receiving an M.D. Degree in 1947. While there he received numerous academic honors, which includes being a member of the first class at the Birmingham campus. He was a member of the Honor Scholarship Committee of both Alabama Medical Schools (Birmingham and Tuscaloosa campus). His military career also began in 1943 while attending medical school, starting as an Apprentice Seaman and Cadet. His internship at Bethesda Naval Hospital, he reached the rank of Lt. JG. (1947-1948). In the 1950's he served as Commanding Medical Officer of the National Guard Medical Battalion. (He resumed a similar position that was reclassified as a Tank Battalion with a medical attachment after returning from active duty). Dr. Patton was called back into active duty during the Korean War in the United States Army and was stationed at Madigan General Hospital at Fort Lewis in Tacoma, Washington. There he was promoted to the rank of Major and received accommodations and Certificate of Achievement for teaching Surgery and Psychiatry; and was head of Male Surgery at Madigan. Dr. Patton had numerous accomplishments. In 1948, with Dr. E.W. Gordon, they established the first hospital in Oneonta, Alabama, thirty-three beds; delivery and surgery suites: x-ray and lab departments. In 1954, was the attending anesthesiologist/Hypnotist during the first Thyroidectomy performed in the United States; whereby hypnosis was the only means of anesthesia, (This surgery was reported in 1969 in the Journal of the Alabama Medical Association and was done at Gordon-Patton Hospital). In 1954, Blount Memorial Hospital opened where he assisted in the planning and developing emergency, surgery, and education departments; as well as an Intensive Cardiac Care Unit. Under his leadership Blount Memorial Hospital was classified as a Category I facility for Continuing Medical Education. (Smallest facility in the state so classified). During the 1960's and 1970's be served as Assistant Clinical Professor of Medicine at UAB and assisted in the development of the Physician's Assistant Program. In 1986 he was elected to Woodlawn High School Hall of Fame. In that same year he was named Distinguished Alumnus of UAB Medical School, becoming the 1Oth such alumnus given to one alumnus per year. At a time in his career he was Chairman of the Professional Relations Committee of the Alabama Association, and The Alabama Medical Association simultaneously. Other Boards, Societies and Civic Organizations: State Board of Censors (Medical) for 10 years; State Board of Medical Examiners for 7 years; Alabama Quality Assurance Committee for 7 years (Board of Directors); Past Chairman Peer Review Committee for Blount and North Jefferson Counties; Served on Board of trustees of the State Medical Association; Board of Directors Alabama Medical Review; Member National Federation of Medical Examiners; State Board/committee of Public Health for 10 years; Member of Lester Memorial Methodist Church (Former member of Board of Trustees); Served several stints as President of the Blount County Medical Association; Southern Medical Association; American Medical Association; Alabama Medical Association; Alabama Academy of Family Practice; Alabama Hospital Advisory Board (5 years); Public Relation Director of Nursing Home Association; UAB Medical School Alumni Association and Cadeceus Club; Former Member of Oneonta Utilities Board; Diplomate American Board of Medical Hypnosis; Fellow of the American Society of Psychomatic Medicine; Courtesy Staff-East End Memorial Hospital, Birmingham; Board of Directors of Citizens Bank and Chairman of the Board for numerous years; Founding member of Oneonta School Board and served many years where he served several terms as president; Long time member and former Governor of Oneonta Rotary Club; Long time member of the Civitan Club.
