Caleb was shot in the face during a Civil War battle on Missionary Ridge, Tenn. Several friends and family were at his side when he was shot. William B.Searcy made statement in behalf of Caleb's widow Kitty and stated that he was standing with him when he was shot and died instantly. He helped bury him on the battlefield where he fell along with others in the same company of soldiers. ( Co. C, 60th NC Regiment). John Ledbetter was also killed in the same battle. William B. "Billy" stated that Dr. Freeman was also present when Owenby and Ledbetter was killed.
