Herman was the son of James Franklin "Frank" and Autra Belle Callaway Conaway. He was a rancher. He was residing in the Swanson Hill community in Anderson County at the time of his death in a Palestine hospital. He shares a stone with his wife, Ezelle Douthit Conaway, who he married 24 September 1937 in Anderson County. He was survived by his wife; one daughter, Venna Marie Conaway Davis of Palestine; two sons, Joe Conner Conaway of Keller and Milton Foster Conaway of Palestine; one sister, Mary Blanche Conaway Higginbotham of Nacogdoches; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. His obituary was published in the Palestine Herald-Press, Friday, 27 February 1987.
