Major League Baseball Player, Coach. For nine seasons (1947 to 1954, 1956), he was a pitcher with the New York Giants and Cincinnati Reds. He was a member and key player on the 1951 National League Pennant-winning Giants' squad. During the World Series, he appeared in 3 games, with two losses and a 6.30 ERA in 10 innings pitched. Born Lawrence Joseph Jansen, he made his big league debut with the Giants on April 17, 1947 and posted a 21 win and 5 loss record during his rookie season. Among his other notable career highlights include two-time National League All Star status (1950 to 1951), league leader with 5 shutouts in 1950 and league leader with 23 wins in 1951. In 291 career regular season games, he compiled a 122 win and 89 loss record with a 3.58 lifetime ERA in 1,765 innings pitched. Following his playing career, Jansen served as a coach for fourteen seasons with the New York/San Francisco Giants (1954, 1961 to 1971) and Chicago Cubs (1972 to 1973). He was on Alvin Dark's staff when the Giants won the National League Pennant in 1962. (bio by: C.S.)
