For nine seasons (1947 to 1954, 1956), he was a pitcher with the New York Giants and Cincinnati Reds. He was a member and key player on the 1951 National League Pennant-winning Giants' squad. During the World Series, he appeared in 3 games, with two losses and a 6.30 ERA in 10 innings pitched. Born Lawrence Joseph Jansen, he made his big league debut with the Giants on April 17, 1947 and posted a 21 win and 5 loss record during his rookie season. Among his other notable career highlights include two-time National League All Star status (1950 to 1951), league leader with 5 shutouts in 1950 and league leader with 23 wins in 1951. In 291 career regular season games, he compiled a 122 win and 89 loss record with a 3.58 lifetime ERA in 1,765 innings pitched. Following his playing career, Jansen served as a coach for fourteen seasons with the New York/San Francisco Giants (1954, 1961 to 1971) and Chicago Cubs (1972 to 1973).
