Since 1833 he served in several ranks in the Royal Dutch Navy. In 1843 he was commander of a squadron in the Mediterranean and in 1852 he became lieutenant-admiral and commander-in-chief of the fleet. In 1849 his brother William had become King of the Netherlands and Grand-Duke of Luxemburg. In 1850 he appointed his younger brother Prince Hendrik Vice-Grand-Duke (a sort of governor)of Luxemburg. After the decease of his first wife Amalia in 1872, he married in 1878 in Potsdam Princess Maria of Prussia (1855-1888). This was mainly for dynastic reasons. The kings eldest son was a bachelor and also determined to stay so, his younger brother was both sickly and unwordly. However, his hope for a future heir to the throne was not fulfilled.
