American Sculptor, Educator.
Born in Paris to American parents and educated at Columbia University in New York City, his commissioned sculptures included Pocahontas at Jamestown, Virginia; the Pieta at St. Patrick's Cathedral, New York City; Alexander Hamilton at Hamilton Grange, New York; the Resurrection bas-relief at the National Cathedral, Washington, D.C.; and, portrait busts of Thomas Jefferson, Samuel J. Tilden, Edward Everett Hale, Theodore Roosevelt, and William Shakespeare.
At the World's Columbian Exposition in 1893 at Chicago, eleven of his works were displayed. He lectured at Stanford University and was a professor of art at George Washington University. Among his publications are: Art for America (1894), The Song Life of a Sculptor (1894), The Technique of Sculpture (1895), The Angel of Clay (1900), a novel, and Nathan Hale, the Ideal Patriot (1902).
He died in New York City.

William Ordway Partridge had a summer place, Douglas Firs, Wayman Lane, **Bar Harbor, Maine area. (Research continuing).

From 1909 New York Times Article:
"Miss C.B. Spence of New York has opened the Partridge cottage, Douglas Firs on Wayman Lane. Mrs. Hunter Slater has leased Bowling Green to Mrs. Hennen Jennings of New York, who was prominent in the New York Colony here last season. Mr. & Mrs. William P. Knapp has leased the Triangle cottage, which they had last season."

From "Biographies of Notable Americans, 1904" and William O's "Sons of the American Revolution" membership information. Sidney Carlin Partridge (brother of William Ordway) b. 1 Sep 1857 in NY. He was the first Episcopal Bishop in Kyoto, Japan. His parents were: George Sidney Partridge, Jr. and Helen Derby Carlin. This entry states also that he is a descendant of George Partridge of Plymouth (BNA, 1904). William Ordway Partridge states in his "SAR" information that he is the grandson of George Sidney Partridge and Mary Tew. His great grandfather was William Tew, a Revolutionary War soldier.

William Ordway Partridge married Mrs. Augusta Merriam of Milton, MA in 1887. (Divorced in 1904) His second wife was Margaret R. Schott whom he married in 1905 in Venice. He was survived by two children, one the daughter of his first wife.

DEDHAM, Mass., April 7. -- The divorce libel of Mrs. Augusta Partridge against the noted sculptor, William Ordway Partridge, was heard before Judge Wait in Norfolk County Superior Court to-day. There was nothing sensational brought out and no contest. Mr. Partridge was present with his counsel, but took no part in the proceedings.
