Zachariah was born on his parents, John Carlisle and Elizabeth Smith's farm east of Newark, Ohio in Hanover Twp. He married Jennie Colwill who was from nearby Knox County. During the Civil War Zachariah served as a Hospital Steward in the 1st Battalion, 18 Regiment of the Union Army. With the experience he received during the war plus his internship with Dr. John F. Hess he was considered a medical physician the rest of his life. In 1878 he moved his family to a farm south of Arkansas City, in Cowley Co. KS. Their children were, Wm. Mongo, Dido May, Torquato Tasso, Rinaldo Cosmo, Edro Bradley and Kitto Stanley Carlisle. Dr. Carlisle was an outstanding diagnostician. He could read five languages and speak three fluently. He learned to read Greek after he was 65 just for the fun of it. He named all his children with Italian words. Example: Torquato Tasso was named after a well known poet born in the 16th century.
