Leone Dolores Berkland, daughter of Lewis and Dorothy (Williamson) Larson, was born March 22, 1912, in Clay County, Iowa. She was baptized on June 18, 1917 in Detroit Lakes, Minnesota and later confirmed on May 23, 1926 at Bethany Lutheran Church in Emmetsburg. Leone attended many different schools moving to various communities with her family. Leone attended Cylinder High School.
On February 3, 1931, Leone married Bert Berkland at Bethany Lutheran Church in Emmetsburg. To this union six children were born.
Leone was a very loving and devoted mother. She enjoyed reading to her children and especially enjoyed poetry and music. She was very active in ballroom dancing and was a member of the International Ballroom Dancing Organization. Leone competed in Mexico City as well as other cities in southwestern United States where she was awarded many trophies for her talent. It can be said that she truly loved all of the arts. She also had a great appreciation for flowers.
Leone was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Depew and was active in church circle. She was also a member of the Farm Bureau Ladies Association and the Freedom Township Women's Group.
Leone died Wednesday, February 12, 2003, at Lakeside Lutheran Home in Emmetsburg, Iowa, at the age of 90. She was preceded in death by her husband, Bert Berkland; three sisters, Viola Gard, Annetta Cushing and Sylvia Berkland; a brother, Edward Larson; and two daughters, Colleen Thompson and Lucinda Berkland.
She is survived by four sons, Eugene and his wife, Joan of Terril, IA, Gary and his wife, Sue of Belmond, IA, Dennis and his wife, Terre of Yankton, SD, and Richard of Scottsdale, AZ; son-in-law, Emmet Thompson of Yorba Linda, CA; eight grandchildren; seven great grandchildren; two sisters, Florence Gard of Spencer, IA and Ruth Zoch of Scottsdale, AZ; as well as many other relatives and friends.
