Elwood "Bud", age 93, of Waunakee, formerly of Fond du Lac and Madison, passed away Sunday at his home. He was born the son of Elvin & Mayme (Helsing) Erstad. On Nov. 8, 1947, he married Virginia Schmitz at Bear Valley. Bud was a member of the Civilian Conservation Corps from Oct. 4, 1934, until Jan. 18, 1936. He served in the United States Army, in the Pacific Theater, during World War II from Nov. 28, 1942, until Dec. 13, 1945. On Nov. 9, 1945, he was awarded the Purple Heart. Bud was employed by Gisholt Machine Company of Madison beginning in May 1942, later transferring to Giddings and Lewis Company of Fond du Lac and retiring in January 1981. He was a member of Holy Family Parish, and attended St. Patrick's Church. Bud loved boating and was a life member of the Fond du Lac Yacht Club, a member of the 4-Lakes Yacht Club of Madison, and a member of the G and L Oldsters Club. He was an avid Packers fan, and loved to play cards with family and friends. Survivors include two daughters, Suzanne (James) Emden of Waunakee, WI, and Mary (Mark) Everson of Neenah, WI; three sons, Thomas (Mary Ann) Erstad of Stoughton, WI, Michael Erstad and girlfriend Joell of Milwaukee, WI, and Ken (Debbie) Erstad of Fond du Lac, WI; nine grandchildren, Christopher, Jesse and Mathew Emden, Erik and Andrea Everson, Kenneth Erstad, and Jason, Cory and Brent Erstad; and four great-grandchildren, MaKenzie and MaKaila Erstad, Max Erstad and Keaghan Emden. He is further survived by a sister, Dorothy Yelinek of Las Vegas, NV; a sister-in-law, Marion Erstad of Evansville, WI; and nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends. He was preceded in death by his wife, Virginia on Nov. 18, 1995; his parents and two brothers, Eugene and Robert Erstad. A Mass of Christian Burial was held with the Rev. Victor Capriolo officiating. Entombment was in the Shrine of Rest Mausoleum, Ledgeview Memorial Park.
