CDR Harry Eugene Thomas
Birth: Sep. 13, 1927
Taft
Kern County
California, USA
Death: Aug. 13, 1965, Vietnam

Cmdr Harry E. Thomas 1927 - 1965

On Black Friday, August 13 1965, seventy-six low-level "Iron Hand" missions were launched to seek out and destroy SAM (surface to air missals) sites. Five aircraft and three pilots were lost to enemy guns. One of the pilots lost on August 13 was Navy CDR Harry E. Thomas. CDR Thomas was the skipper of the "Blue Tails"--VA 153, an attack squadron flying off the carrier USS CORAL SEA.

Thomas, a Korean War veteran had been skipper of the squadron since May. He had amassed day and night air combat experience, and was an extremely important asset to the USAF and their squadrons. He taught the younger officers night flying, which in Vietnam, proved to be not only highly successful, but also safer than day strikes.

On the August 13th mission, Blue Tail members went on a mass, low-level strike looking for SAM sites. Thomas' aircraft flew into a volley of flak and was hit by heavy anti-aircraft fire and crashed. Observers noted that the canopy was still intact on the aircraft, thus precluding any chance that Thomas survived. He was listed Killed in Action, Body Not Recovered -- on October 30, 1996 an update listed his status as body recovered due to joint field activities in 1996 that recovered his remains.

CMDR Thomas is the son of Ben J. Thomas and Margaret B. Gorhing Thomas.
