  Bernard H. Stiever, 69, of 879
E. Wabasha St. died Wednesday,
March 26, 1997, at Community
Memorial Hospital.

  He was born
July. 17, 1927, in
Rochester to
Christian J. and
Lucina B.
(R e t t e r a t h)
Stiever.

  He married
Mary C. Mack on
Oct. 25, 1947, in
Winona.

  Bernard was an employee of
the U.S. Postal Service for 30
years, retiring in 1988.

  He was a member of Cathedral
of the Sacred Heart, American
Legion Leon J. Wetzel Post 9,
Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie
1243 and Knights of Columbus
Fourth Degree Bishop Francis M.
Kelly Assembly. An important
part of Bernie's life was devoted
to the Knights of Columbus in all
phases of the organization.

  He served in the U.S. Navy
during World War II.

  He was a beloved husband,
father and grandfather of Mary,
his wife; one daughter, Barbara
Stiever of Winona; three sons,
Paul (Connie) Stiever of Cottage
Grove, Mark Stiever of Winona
and Bill (Tammy) Stiever of
Winona; two grandsons, Jerrid
(Kristen) Stiever and Scott
Stiever; one granddaughter.
Jolene; and one great-grandson,
Michael -Damian. He is also
survived by one brother, Arthur
(Noreen) Stiever of Winona, and
one sister, Catherine (John)
Kertzman of Milwaukee.

  He was preceded in death by
his parents; one son, Michael;
and one brother, Walter.

  A Mass of Christian Burial will
be held on Tuesday, April 1, at 10
a.m. at Cathedral of the Sacred
Heart, with preliminary services
at 9:30 a.m. at Watkowski Funeral
Home. The Rev. John M. Sauer
will officiate. Burial will be in St.
Mary's Cemetery.

  Friends may call Monday from
2-4 p.m. and from 7-9 p.m. at the
funeral home. The Knights of
Columbus will meet in body for
the Christian Wake Service at
7:30 p.m. The Knights of
Columbus Bishop M. Kelly
Assembly will serve as honour
guard at the church.

  The American Legion will
conduct military rites at the
cemetery.

  Pallbearers will be nephews.
