Vernon Cornelius Allen was born John Thomas Gruesz to single parents John Martin of Greensburg, Indiana and Josephine Gruez of Cincinnati, Ohio and formerly Milhausen, Indiana. In 1892 he was given up to the Children's Home in Cincinnati by his mother shortly after the child was admitted to the hospital with the measels. On February 3, 1896, the child was given up by the Childrens Home for adoption to Samuel and Martha Allen of Indiana.
The child's natural grandmother was Mrs. (Katie) Wilhelm Gruesz. of Cincinnati (208 Woodburn Avenue) and earlier Milhausen, Indiana.
Vernon Cornelius Allen and Martha Lavinia Stipe were united in marriage October 18, 1913 in Newport, Campbell County, Kentucky by Justice of the Pease P. J. Gleason. Both participants listed Milan, Indiana as their residence. This union resulted in the birth of four children: Mary Pauline Allen-Fricker, Willard Stipe Allen, Warren Harding Allen, and David Samuel Allen.
