Jackie Edward Baker, a longtime resident of Livingston Manor, NY, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, September 9, 2009 in his home with his wife, Helen, at his side. He was 81.
The son of the late Ralph and Laura Mae Gross Baker, he was born on June 24, 1928 in Elmsford, NY.
Jack enlisted in the U.S. Army as a Private First Class in 1951 and was honorably discharged in 1953. He was assigned to Fort Bragg in North Carolina where he became a tank mechanic. He returned to civilian life and worked for Orseck Pontiac in Liberty, NY until he opened his own garage in 1967. He retired his business in 1991, spending more time with family and friends. Jack Baker was the kind of person you could count on to treat you with respect, dignity, and honor. "My first example was during Woodstock when he repaired many people's cars and didn't ask for anything in return," said his son Gary Baker. He always loved having his family and friends around him. He and his wife traveled to several family reunions to visit his brothers and sisters and their families. He was an avid card player holding nightly games at his home. I tried to learn the art of poker playing, but after numerous loosing streaks my father told me not to take up this sport, said Gary. "He never seemed to lose." He also loved playing golf with his partners of many years and until recently held a membership with the Gold Club in Liberty.
He was a loving father who wanted the best for his children and never hesitated to suggest ways to accomplish this and unrelentingly supported their career choices. He loved having a groomed lawn and you could always see him doing something in the yard. He is an example of doing the right thing regardless of the issue or outcome. Jack Baker will be missed by many but never forgotten!
He is the brother of Elizabeth Danko, Oneida Meszaros, Jacob Baker, Chris Schwartz, James Baker, Thelma Lake, Joseph Baker, Mark Baker, and Barbara Bower. His wife, Helen and three sons, Brad of New York, Jackie of Virginia, and Gary of California survive him.
Family will receive friends on Sunday, September 13, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at Herbert C. Bryant Funeral Home, 29 Pearl St., Livingston Manor.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, September 14, at St. Aloysius Roman Catholic Church, Church St., Livingston Manor, at 9 a.m. Msgr. Collins will officiate. Interment will follow at the Sullivan County Veterans Cemetery, Sunset Blvd., Liberty, NY with full military honors.
