He received a liberal education; was brought up as a farmer; was a justice of the peace from 1764 to the Revolution; was a member of the constitutional convention of July 15, 1776; member of the Assembly in 1776; and again from 1778 to 1783; a member of the Supreme Executive Council from March 4, 1777, to November 9, 1778; and from November 3, 1784, to October 20, 1787; member of the Council of Safety from October to December, 1777; one of the commissioners to remove the public loan office in 1777; and by Governor Mifflin appointed one of the Associate Judges of Cumberland county, August 17, 1791.

In 1750, Jonathan Hoge married Isabella Armstrong, daughter of James Armstrong, Both of them resided in the Silver Spring Township area, which was still a part of the old East Pennsboro Township until 1825. They continued to live there for the rest of their lives.
Nine children of Isabella Hoge, daughter of James Armstrong and sister of William Armstrong, were named on a 1782 Deed that references the Wills of the latter two. Eight of them were named in multiple petitions to Orphans' Court to partition the land of Jonathan Hoge Esq., starting in 1800. As a middle child was not named in 1800, it shows all of these were children of Jonathan and Isabella:
1) John Hoge: Commissioned a Lieutenant on 6 February 1776 in Capt. McClean's company, Col. William Irvine's battalion of Pennsylvania troops. Captured at Isle Aux Noix in June or July 1776 and was prisoner for 2-3 years. Married to Elsy in 1782 and his wife was still that name on an 1801 Deed.
2) James Hoge: Over 21 and unmarried in 1782. Not seen to have married through (at least) 1805.
3) Ann Hoge: Married David Reddick by 1782
4) Mary Hoge: Married Jonathan Wallace by 1782
5) David Hoge: Over 21 and unmarried in 1782. Died before 1800. No children.
6) Rachel Hoge: Over 18 and unmarried in 1782. Married Robert Bell in 1788.
7) Elizabeth Hoge: Under 18 and unmarried 1782. Married John Armstrong
8) Sarah Hoge: Under 18 and unmarried 1782. Married John Carothers Esq.
