The funeral of Mrs. Josiah Twist took place on Friday afternoon, and was largely attended. The remains were taken to the Presbyterian Church at Inkerman where Rev. Mr. Harding conducted services. The flowers were numerous and beautiful, among them being a pillow from the family, wreath from her sister, Mrs. Shaffer, boquet from friends. The pall bearers were George McMine, Robert Kidd, E. Scureman, John Reid, Luke Corbett, and George Hicks. Interment was in the Odd Fellows Cemetery, Pittston.

Mary Ann (Evans) Twist was born 1853 in Yatesville to Daniel and Ann Thomas who immigrated from Glanmorgan, Wales between 1840 and 1850. Daniel Evans worked for the coal mines in Jenkins, Luzerne county where he passed away suddenly at a young age of an accident in 1860. Fatherless, at a young age, Mary and her sisters Elizabeth Evans and Hannah Shaffer earned money as domestic workers at family homes. Mary's mother Anna later married David M Williams, Alderman and was raised by the S. Wales native and Alerman. Around 1872 Mary married Josiah Twist, a coal miner originally from from Manchester, England. Mary was a supporting wife to Josiah, a coal miner for the Hudson Colliery and the Laflin Powder Mills. During the 1870s and 1880s, Mary and Josiah lived in Plains, Laflin, and Parsons. Six children were born: Mary Elizabeth,died in childhood, Daniel, Henry, Margaret Chase, Minnie Jordan, and Chester. Mary succumbed to a complication of diseases early in life at the age of 43 in 1898. Her end is truly at peace and she is close to God as she is adorned on a hill at the Pittston City Cemetery
