Princess Maria-Pia was the daughter of of King Vittorio-Emmanuel II of Italy and his wife Adelheid Franzisea Hapsburg-Lorraine, Archduchess of Austria. She was the older sister of King Umberto I
On 6 October 1862, she married King Luis I of Portugal. They were the parents of Alfonso and Carlos
