Rev William Murphy, Jr
Birth: Mar. 12, 1759
Halifax County
Virginia, USA
Death: Nov. 2, 1833
Farmington
St. Francois County
Missouri, USA

The Reverend William Murphy [Jr.] was the son of Rev. William Murphy [Sr.] {of 1720/1725 to 19-Nov-1799} and Martha Hodges Murphy {of 1724 to 1761/1763}. He was the step-son to Sarah Barton Murphy (William [Sr.]'s 2nd wife). William "Big Bill" Murphy [Jr.] along with his brother Joseph {gravestone in Masonic Cemetery} and 1/2 brothers David Sr. {gravestone in Masonic Cemetery}, Dubart {gravestone in IOOF Cemetery} and Richard {burial location unknown} are credited with starting the Murphy Settlement which eventually became Farmington, Missouri. William [Jr.] married Rachel Henderson on January 26, 1782 in Green County, Tennessee. They had between 13 to 15 children {listed below}.

Also see web-link of the 1918 book by his granddaughter, Alice Murphy Sturgess, titled History Of Rev. William Murphy And His Descendents . {Note on current link to book: Use the "Impatient?" link to speed up the book content download} Note though, this book was subject to early genealogy research errors. For example listing this Rev. William Murphy [Jr.] as son of William & Mary Fanquoy. This was later proven false. See next reference of "Cook, Murphy, Hodges Families of Early Virginia", pages 92 & 93.

Hint, one can view one page at a time or down load/view the full 53MB "Printing Version" at the very bottom of the options on the left.

There are multiple web-sites for the genealogy of William Murphy but not always with the same ancestry or descendent line. Here are three of them for information of William Murphy Sr. & Jr.:
1) Morey's Attic on William Murphy
2) Davies Family on William Crawford Murphy
3) RootsWeb on William Murphy of 1759

On the 200 anniversary of William Murphy's birth [Jr.], an article was printed in the Farmington newspaper of "Wm. Murphy 1759-1959" linked from Mackley Genealogy web-site.

An entry for Campbell County, Tennesses for William's father, Rev. William Murphy [Sr.], incorrectly label's William [Sr.] as the William Murphy from Ireland. William [Sr] born around 1720 to 1725 was the son of William & Eleanor (nee Echols) Murphy of Virginia. Eleanor (or Elizabeth by some research) Echols was born in America to John & Mary (nee Cave) Echols. Now the William Murphy born in the 1690s & married Eleanor, he might have been born in Ireland. The second generation William Murphy (a.k.a. William [Sr.]) who married Martha Hodges and then Sarah Barton was born in Virginia. Rev. William Murphy [Sr.] & wife Sarah Barton Murphy are mentioned at web-link:
