Martha Jane Brewer was born in Greenwood, Johnson County, Indiana. Martha's parents were from Kentucky & early pioneer residents of Indiana. She grew up on a farm in Greenwood and had two sisters (Mary Ellen & Margaret Cornelia) and three brothers (William Walter, John Millard & James Arthur). She was the second oldest sibling.

She met Albert Thornton Edwards, when she was approx. 15 years old, while Albert was visiting a brother near Greenwood. After Albert served 3 years fighting in the Civil War, Martha & Albert were married at her parent's home in Greenwood on August 24th, 1865. Martha was 18 years old and Albert was 24 years old.

In the Fall of 1865, Martha & Albert moved to Benton County, Iowa and settled on the Samuel Lowe Farm which was 3 miles southeast of Vinton. Martha & Albert lived there for 25 years, raising 11 children (9 to maturity). In 1901, they moved to the Tilford Farm, just south of town. Three years later they purchased the place just south of the fairgrounds, where they lived nine years. In 1908 they moved to a house on Elm Street in Vinton.

Martha was 19 years old when she had her first baby, Anna, nicknamed "Annie."
Following Anna, Martha had two sons, Cornelius & James who both died as young children. The cause of their deaths is not yet known. Martha was 36 years old when she had her 11th baby, Margaret, nicknamed "Maggie."

Martha died on January 8th, 1929 at the age of 82. Albert passed away 7 years before Martha. Martha is buried at Evergreen Cemetery in Vinton, Benton County, Iowa.
