William first came to Texas ca 1859/60. He could not be found in the Catahoula Parish census for 1860 or the 1860 census for Angelina County. In the 1870 census for Angelina County he is shown as being married to Frances with 4 year old child (Byron).
William owned his farm in Census Precinct # 4 of Angelina County in 1900. In that year, he and his wife Francis V. Ellis had only three of the eight children they would eventually have. William could not read or write. He reported on the 1900 census that his father was born in South Carolina and his mother was born in Mississippi. William served in Company I, 13th Texas Cavalry Regiment of Walker's Division, CSA for four years during the Civil War. This Cavalry was the 1st Brigade of Major General John G. Walker whose service during his time in the Trans-Mississippi Department won the name "Walker's Greyhound Division" due to their ability to march rapidly. William applied for a CSA pension in Angelina County on July 19, 1902 but was turned down due to the fact he owned property, he failed to meet the time of service requirements, and he was not considered indigent. He applied again October 5, 1910 and was granted a pension. A 1902 doctor's examination revealed that William was totally blind in one eye (probable cause given was cataracts). This blindness is verified by a photo.
In 1902 William stated on his CSA Civil War pension application that he owned 102.5 acres and two small mules. William was deeded 107.5 acres of land in Angelina County from G.H. Conner on November 20, 1901 and 177 acres from W.B. Mantooth in December 22, 1884.
This author is not sure of William's middle name but has assumed that it was Montgomery. I will record here that there was a William Marsil McClendon born in Rankin County, Mississippi on September 2, 1842. However this W.M. McClendon was supposed to have died February 8, 1867. This is worth noting since the name Marceille was used in the family of William's grandchildren.
