When war ignited in Europe in 1914, Leon volunteered his services to his native land of France and left Miami on August 14, 1914. He saw active service in both the battles of Marne and at Soissons, was wounded three times and gassed once. He received the French Legion of Honor, Crox du Guerre with two palms and the Medaille Militaire.
Leon moved to Akron in 1920 and was employed by the Firestone Tire and Rubber Company from where he retired. He married his widow Martha and had a daughter Jacqueline in Akron.
