The son of Johann Simon Adolph Altenbernd and Catherina Friedrika Carolina Bocker, "Wilhelm" was born in Lippe Detmold, Horn, Westfalen, Germany. He came to the United States along with a brother, Conrad Altenbernd, on 17 Oct 1860 on board a ship called the New York.
Wilhelm married Katie Hill on 08 Jan 1864. They were the parents of 9 children.
The Altenbernds helped found St. Paul's Evangelical Church in Eudora, Douglas County, Kansas.
At the time of his death, Wilhelm was 74 years, 5 months and 5 days old. He was survived by his wife, Katie, who passed away in 1913.
