Harold D. Austin

Hancock - Harold Daymond Austin, 79, Hancock, formerly of Pierz and Little Falls area, died Tuesday, Oct. 10, 1995, at his home.

He was born Sept. 6, 1916, in Waseca to Harold and Bernice (Kruger) Austin. He attended school in Pierz and graduated from Little Falls High School in 1934. He worked as a barber in Pierz. He entered the military service in 1944 and served as a paratrooper and medic in Europe during World War II. He received the Purple Heart and Bronze Star awards. After his discharge, he returned to his barber work in Pierz. He moved to Morris in 1957, where he owned and oeprated a Ben Franklin Variety Store until 1964. He moved to Hancock and returned to barbering. He married Lorraine Hartmann on Dec. 16, 1943. She died in a car accident in 1957. He married Marie (Henning) Blair on Oct. 9, 1965, in Clontarf. He was a member of St. Malachy's Catholic Church at Clontarf, Morris American Legion, VFW, Knights of Columbus and DAV.

Survivors include his wife, Marie; four sons, Harold Austin, Monticello, Charles Austin, Shakopee, Raymond Walligora, Monterey, Calif., and Peter Walligora, Salinas, Calif.; four daughters, Marbeth Sazenski, Shoreview, Margaret Tokar, St. Paul, Deborah Austin, Detroit Lakes, and Jean Johnson, Waukonia, Ill; stepchildren, Larry Blair, Spokane, Wash., Bill Blair, Kimball, Patricia Van Horsen, Sheldon, Iowa, and Roger Blair, Hancock; five brothers, Bill Austin and Bob Austin, both of Brainerd, James Austin, Dean Austin and Jady Austin, all of Pierz; 15 grandchildren; 10 stepgrandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and six stepgreat-grandchildren.

His first wife, Lorraine, a son, Gilbert, a daughter, Nanette, a sister, Lola, and a stepgrandson died earlier.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. Malachy's Catholic Church at Clontarf with Father Merle Monnens officiating. Burial will be at 3 p.m. Friday at St. Joseph's Catholic Cemetery of Pierz.
