JOHNNIE BASS WAS MY MATERNAL GRANDPA.

****************************
Johnnie Bass was the son of Manning B and Kathryn[Katie] Syntha Reynolds Bass.He was born in Inman S.C.He was married to Maude Robinson Bass they had one daughter Mary Alice Bass Cannon.Im not sure when, at some point when Johnnie was younger they moved to Greer SC.Johnnie worked as a carpenter with his Father. He joined the US Navy and then the U.S.army/airforce around the age of twentyfour. He spent nearly twenty one years in the service for his country. Johnnie was a prisoner of war in Germany. He was released when Belgim came in,He was a Master Sgt. Johnnie was a military man all the way.I was told that he even tried to re up in the veitnam war.JOHNNIE H BASS will now be refered to as Grandpa.I remember going around town with Grandpa. He was well known and well respected,I thought he knew everyone. We would visit alot of people at their homes and their places of bussiness.I liked going with him in his little red VW,I can still smell it, a mixture of rubber and oil.I only wish I had spent more time with him.He was a great man and a wonderful grandpa.I had to grow up to understand his value.
He retired but he did not want to. He was one of a kind.
A friend to the end. He was a hero to me,and many others.
Grandpa had what they use to call shellshock, now post tramatic shock disorder. It was a hard thing to do,watching
such a strong man SUFFER from seeing so many Casualties and Fatalities of War.He lost his mind,He spent a good bit
of the time he was home in the Veteran's hospital in Augusta GA.I remember going to visit him when I was young.
So many men and women have made so many sacrifices and
gave all for our freedom's.God Bless them, each one.We should never forget the price that has been paid for our
liberties, peace and tranquility.I LOVE AND MISS YOU SO MUCH GRANDPA!!!!
