Meredith was a son of John Darlington and Mary Bruce, born in New Bloomfield, Pennsylvania Colony. He worked as a tanner.

Meredith was listed on the Muster Rolls of the Cumberland County Militia in 1783 at the age of 19, and he first appeared on the Pay Rolls of the Cumberland Militia in 1788. On January 1, 1799 he was elected Captain of the 8th Company.

Meredith married Jane McClure about 1793, and was the father of six children:
John, Sarah E., David Bruce, Wilson, Meredith, and Samuel Darlington.
