Roy was born in Battle Creek, Michigan. He lived most of his live in Muskegon, MI. On April 23, 1945, Roy married Alida Koster. Together they had five children. Robert, Ronald, Russell, Ruth Ann and Ronda.
From March 30,1942, to January 10,1946 Roy served in the U.S. Army in World War II. He attained the rank of tec 4 and was a truck driver during his tenure of duty. He was also awarded several medals and awards, to include the Sharpshooter badge for carbine.
He had two brothers, Eugene and Donald and one sister Daisy.
In his younger days, Roy drove a tanker truck hauling fuel. Later, he worked with all kinds of glass (windows). He was also known for volunteering his glass work with churches and other needy groups.
Roy was a staple at the local McDonald's restaurant where he always liked to have breakfast. So much so, that they closed the morning of his funeral, so the employees could attend.
We could always tell when uncle Roy was visiting. Before we saw him, you could smell the plesant aroma of his distinct cigars. Always a welcome smell.
Roy was loved by family and many others, and will be sadly missed..
Muskegon Chronicle, Muskegon, Michigan, 6 December 1993 HOWER, MR. LEROY "ROY" (Husband of Alida) Muskegon Mr. LeRoy "Roy" D. Hower, 75, died early Sunday morning, Dec. 5, 1993. He was born Aug. 11, 1918 in Battle Creek, MI, & resided in Muskegon most of his life. He was a member of First Christian Reformed Church, & was an Army Veteran of WW II. He had worked in the glass business for over 40 years, where he was known to many as the glass man, & retired from Muskegon Glass CO. in 1980. SURVIVORS include his wife, the former Alida Koster, who he married on April 23, 1945; 5 children, Robert (Sandy) Hower of Hudsonville, Ron (Julie) Hower of Muskegon, Russ (Mickey) Hower of Jenison, Ruth Hower, & Ronda Hower, both of Muskegon; 10 grandchildren & 1 great grandson; 1 brother, Eugene (Rose) Hower, Sr. (deceased, June 2009)) of Grand Haven; 1 sister, Daisy Hower,(Hill) Knollinger (deceased Sept. 2009) of Whitehall. He was preceded in death by his brother, Don Hower, in June 1973. SERVICES will be 1 PM Wed. at First Christian Reformed Church, with Rev. Carl H. Bruxvoort officiating. Burial will be in Sunrise Memorial Gardens. VISITATION: 2-4 & 7-9 PM Tues. at the Sytsema Funeral Home 737 Apple Avenue.
