Daniel Wilson Duggan was the third of his name. His grandfather was an Ulster Scot, born on a ship traveling from Northern Ireland to the United States. His family were early pioneers of East Tennessee.
Daniel's story is a sad one, though it is one of dedication to a cause in which he believed. Daniel, red-haired and blue-eyed, was one of four brothers to join the Union Army. Daniel and his family believed strongly they should remain loyal to the Union. Family relations even worked to help East Tennessee become a separate state (as West Virginia did).
Daniel was mustered in for a 3 year term in Nov of 1862. Records show at least three hospitalizations for sickness, including measles. He was mustered out just shy of three years of service in July of 1865.
Daniel returned home to his wife Sarah Jane Bird Duggan, and two small daughters, Dora and Nancy. Daniel died in 1868 and a posthumus daughter, Sarah, was born in 1869. We do not know if the war contributed to his death at the young age of 29, but with so many records of his illness, that may have been the case.
