"Pony" Donovan
Learn about sponsoring this memorial...
Birth: unknown
Death: Aug. 22, 1872

August 22, 1872
The notorious "Pony" Donovan was known as the King of the Horse Thieves. Showing remarkably bad timing, he was arrested while walking down the streets of Hays and thrown in jail.
Another badman, Bill McClellan was being held for the murder of John F. "Jack" Wright over the love of a young maiden, Nellie Baldwin.
Both Donovan and McClellan were held in the same room in the basement of the courthouse, McClellan chained to a supporting post. One night friends of Wright, determined to avenge his death snuck up to the cellar window, stuck their rifles in and began pouring gunfire into that basement, killing Donovan and not hitting McClellan.
