Birth: Mar. 19, 1918
Death: Jun. 6, 2006

AUSTIN JAMES CALHOUN, a good man who lived a good life, died June 6, 2006. He was born March 19, 1918, to the late Austin J. and Ruth B. Calhoun. Mr. Calhoun served his country in a twenty-year career in the United States Naval Reserve where he rose to the rank of Captain and during which he fought in World War II and Korea. He graduated first in his class in 1950 from what is now the University of Memphis Law School, then entered into a successful forty-year partnership with the late Eugene J. Phelan. Mr. Calhoun pioneered the practice of bankruptcy law and demonstrated to subsequent generations of attorneys how to succeed in that difficult, complex branch of the law. He served on the Vestry at Church of the Holy Communion Episcopal Church and, for many years, superintended its Sunday School. Mr. Calhoun was an avid fisherman, voracious reader, backyard farmer, and loving grandfather to nine grandchildren. He is survived by Eleanor M. Calhoun, his devoted wife of sixty-three years, his sons; Frederick S. Calhoun of Washington, D. C. and David M. Calhoun of Atlanta, GA; his daughter Barbara C. Cargill of The Woodlands, Texas and his loving grandchildren: Austin J., Emily G., and Amy B. Calhoun; Avery E., Payton B., and J. Harris Calhoun; Charles M., C. Blake, and Connor J. Cargill. An older son, Austin James, Jr., died in 1974 of cancer. His sisters, Nelle B. Allen of Redwood City, CA, and Mary Hal Hoagland of Louisville, KY, also survive him. Mr. Calhoun will be remembered by all who knew him for his unassuming dignity, dedicated professionalism, impeccable honesty, and dry wit, but most of all he will be revered by all who loved him. Services will be held at Noon, Thursday, June 8 at Church of the Holy Communion, 4645 Walnut Grove Rd., Memphis, TN, 38117 with a visitation at the church from 11 A. M. to Noon in the Cheney Parish Hall. Burial will be at Memorial Park Cemetery. Mr. Calhoun would have preferred, in lieu of flowers, donations be made in his name to Church of the Holy Communion or to Metropolitan Inter-Faith Association (MIFA), 910 Vance Avenue, Memphis, TN, 38126.
