The Bedel (also Bedell,Beadle, etc.)family was an old Virginia family, later moving into Ohio, Kentucky, and Indiana. Luther was in Clark, Indiana by 1811 and was an eye witness to the Pidgeon Roost Massacre of 1812. He served under General Harrison and was wounded and captured in the battle of Tippecanoe. Luther settled in Jackson County by 1814 and cleared 200 acres and built a log house, where the first religious meeting (Missionary Baptist) was held.
