Operation Caused Mrs. Bush's Death
No particulars of the death of Mrs. Eleanor A. Stanton Bush, the eldest daughter of Edwin M. Stanton, Secretary of War in the cabinet of Abraham Lincoln and sister of L.H. Stanton, a broker of New Orleans, in Berkeley, California, on Monday, have been received. Mr. Stanton had heard of the illness of his sister while in Virginia and was hurrying to California when he received the news of her death upon his arrival in this city on Tuesday.

It is understood that Mrs. Bush died after an operation at the residence of her only daughter, Mrs. [Eleanor Stanton Bush] Chamberlain, the wife of Major [Weston Percival] Chamberlain, United States Army. Major Chamberlain was at one time the Commandant at Jackson Barracks and Mrs. Bush visited her daughter at the army post on a number of occasions and became well known in this city.

Mrs. Bush was born in Washington, D.C. in 1857 and lived many years in the national capital. She was married to Colonel James C. Bush, United States Army, an officer in the artillery, who died four years ago while Commander of Fort Warren, in Boston Harbor.

Mr. Stanton has received no information as to the arrangements for interment, but is of the opinion that the body will be taken to Washington to be buried beside her father, mother and other members of the family.
