| Birth: | unknown, Egypt | | Death: | unknown, Egypt | Egyptian Pharaoh. He ruled during Egypt's Twenty First Dynasty, coming to the throne in 986 BC and reigning for nineteen years. He was Pharaoh during a time of unrest known as the Third Intermediate Period and while he ruled Upper Egypt from Tanis, the High Priest Pinedjem II controlled Lower Egypt from Thebes. Unusually for a king of this period, he left a number of monuments in Lower Egypt, and he is considered to be one of the most powerful rulers of his dynasty. His construction projects included doubling the size of the Temple of Amun at Tanis and also building at the Temple of Horus at Mesen, at Heliopolis and at Piramesse. He also built a new temple to Amun at Memphis and is connected with several monuments at Thebes. Some scholars believe that he is the Pharaoh who entered into an alliance with the Biblical King Solomon against the Philistines and destroyed the town of Gezer, but this has been disputed. His original tomb has never been discovered, and may have been flooded by the Nile. His mummy is considered to be one of those found in the antechamber of Psusennes I's tomb at Tanis. (bio by: js)
