Scharf S. Sumner, 74, former chairman and president of Western Savings and Loan, now Crossland Savings, died Thursday.
Mr. Sumner, who began his banking career in 1946, led Western Savings for more than 30 years, retiring in 1984. During his tenure the company's assets grew from $5 million to more [than] $500 million. It merged with Crossland Savings in 1987.
The Richfield native was a former president of the Salt Lake Chamber of Commerce and the Utah League of Insured Savings Institutions. He had also served in leadership roles with the U.S. League of Insured Savings Institutions and other national financial organizations.
He had also served on the boards of Rowland Hall-St. Mark's School, Holy Cross Hospital, Monroe, Snowbird Institute, Alta Club and the Salt Lake Country Club.
Born in 1915 to Christopher J. and Elithe Peterson Sumner, he graduated from the Army-Navy Academy in Carlsbad, Calif., and from the University of Utah. He was a major during World War II. He married Patricia McCarthy, who preceded him in death.
He is survived by three children, Suzanne S. Miller, San Marino, Calif.; Christopher J. Sumner, Patrick Sumner, both of Salt Lake City, and three grandchildren.
The family is planning a private graveside service. The family suggests contributions to Rowland Hall-St. Mark's School.
