William Garrett died in 1899 as the result of a violent confrontation with his son-in-law John Wesley Stevenson. There apparently had been ongoing bad relations between the two men. John and his brother passed the Garrett family farm in a wagon. William Garrett pursued the wagon and confronted John with a pistol. John Wesley Stevenson struck William Garrett with an axe he had in the wagon. John was tried for murder but was acquitted on the grounds of self defense.

John and his wife Dora (William Garrett's daughter) continued their married life, apparently happily, for another fifty or so years.
