OXFORD - Herbert F. Mead, 79, of Oxford, died late Sunday (May 31, 1981) at Chenango Memorial Hospital, Norwich, following an extended illness.

Funeral services will be Thursday at 1:30 p.m. at the Fahy Funeral Home of Norwich with the Rev. Stanley Wilson, pastor fo the North Norwich United Methodist Church, officiating. Cremation will be in Waterville. There will be no calling hours.

He is survived by three daughters, Mrs. Carl (Amie) Gridley, Norwich; Mrs. Dorothy Backus, Oxford and Mrs. Mary Bentley, Oxford; six sons, Albert (Jack) Mead, Coos Bay, Ore.; Floyd, Vallejo, Calif.; Carl, Loveland, Colo.; Don, Arvada, Colo.; Lawrence, Vallejo, Calif.; and Charles of Oxford; a half-brother Boyd Thompson, Parkers Prarie, Minn.; 31 grandchildren and 19 great grandchildren.

Mr. Mead was born July 28, 1901 at Maine, N.Y., a son of Daniel and Ernestine Frink Mead. He married Anna Downs on Oct. 7, 1923 at Syracuse. She died March 5, 1974.

He was a resident of Oxford since 1935 and for many years owned and operated an excavating business until his retirement in 1975. As a youth, he had served as a teamster, driving horses in the Nanticoke-Albany area. He had also worked as a carpenter in Albany, for IBM in Binghamton, with the Chenango County Highway Department for 20 years, and for several years for the David Thompson junk dealership in Norwich. He and his family also operated a farm in the McDonough area prior to locating at Oxford.

Oxford couple celebrate golden wedding anniversary

OXFORD - Mr. and Mrs. Herbert Mead of the Oxford-Guilford Road celebrated their golden wedding anniversary Sunday, Oct. 7, at an open house held at their home and planned by the couple's nine children.

The Meads were married on Oct. 7, 1923, in Syracuse. The moved to Oxford in 1935. Mr. Mead worker for the Chenango County Highway Department fo 9 and a half years. Since 1952 he has been self employed as a backhoe operator. He is now 72 and says he is going to keep working as long as he can.

Mrs. Mead raised a family of nine children, Mrs. Carl (Amie) Gridley of Norwich, Mrs. Dorothy Backus of New Berlin; Jack Mead of Coos Bay, Oregon, Floyd E. Mead of Oneida, Carl F Mead of Loveland, Col., Donald Mead of Arvada, Col., Lawrence G. Mead of Virginia Beach, Va., Mrs. Mary E. Bentley of Oxford RD 1 and Charles A. Mead of Oxford.

The couple also has 32 grandchildren and eight great grandchildren.

Friends and relatives called throught the day.

A money tree marked the occasion as well as gifts of flowers, and the couple recieved many congratulatory cards.

A beautifully decorated wedding cake was served during the day.
