Graveside services for James Buckingham Skewes will be held Friday at 11 a.m. at Magnolia Cemetery with the Rev. Helen Tester officiating.
Mr. Skewes, 81, of Meridian and native of Milwaukee, Wisc., died Monday, Sept. 14, 2009, at Riley Hospital. He was born in Milwaukee, Wisc., but spent his whole life in Meridian, Miss. He was a graduate of The University of Mississippi. While at Ole Miss he was a member of the Kappa Sigma social fraternity and of the Lamda Sigma journalist fraternity. He served as owner, editor, and publisher of The Meridian Star from 1958 until his retirement in 1990. He was on the board which founded the Lamar Elementary School, the proudest achievement of his life. He was also a lifetime member of the Kiwanis Club. In the past he also served on the boards of WTOK Television and Riley Memorial Hospital. In New Orleans, he was a member of the Bienville Club and the Iris Club. He was also a member of the Royal Order of Saint George. He was a lifelong Episcopalian and a member of The Church of the Mediator where he served as a Verger for many years.
Survivors include his wife, Hilah McLean Skewes; and several cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. James H. Skewes.
