The records of Thomas Connally show Colonial Service in 1758 and Revolutionary Service in the Illinois Battalion in 1777. The entry appears on a roll headed:
"Pay Roll of Captain Richard M. Gary, Company of Regulars in the Illinois Battalion of Virginia Troops, under the Command of Col. George Rogers Clark, Commander-in-Chief of the Western Department 1779."
Thomas Connally, rank in service, fifer; when enlisted into service, March 4th; when discharged, May 31st; number of days served, eighty nine; pay per month 8-2/3 Amount Virginia Currency 7-14-3 1/4.(5 reference)

Thomas Connally was a tall, bony man in statue, he served as a recruiting officer in Va. during the American Revolution. After the War, he and his family emigrated from Va. to Orange Co., N. C. about where present day Chapel Hill is located. He was a teacher actively interested in the establishment of the University of North Carolina. On 17 Oct 1796, he deeded 107 acres of land to the Trustees of the University of North Carolina as witnessed by George Daniel and Garvin Alvis.(6 reference)

Contemporary friends for years, John Gaddis Sr. and Thomas Connally now have a daughter and son married to each other thereby drawing the two families even closer. They have lived in the same St, Thomas District around New Hope Chapel (Episcopalian), which later became Chapel Hill, Orange Co., N. C. and have served on many committies asv evidenced by some of these records:
