Mr. Robert "Bob" D. Eatman

Mr. Robert "Bob" D. Eatman, age 84, of Sharpsburg, Ga., passed away on Monday, Sept. 7, 2009, at Piedmont Newnan Hospital. He was born on Dec. 2, 1924, in Charlotte, N.C., to Jamie A. and Estelle Greene Eatman. He was a member of Turin United Methodist Church. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II.

Mr. Eatman enlisted in the Army in 1940 at the age of 15. He later joined a group of 2,997 seasoned jungle fighters chosen to form the top-secret 5307th Composite Unit (Provisional). The group, led by Brig. General Frank Merrill, came to be known as Merrill's Marauders. The Marauders' mission was to undertake long-range reconnaissance missions behind Japanese lines in Burma to cut enemy communication links and disrupt supply lines while Allies fought to reopen the Burma Road, a vital Allied supply link between India and China.

He was awarded the Bronze Star for valor and a Bronze Star for his actions in battle. After the war, Merrill's Marauders were officially absorbed into what became the 75th Ranger Regiment, which still honors Merrill's Marauders today. Eatman's name is on the Ranger Walk of Fame at Fort Benning.

When he left the Army, Eatman worked in several automotive-related businesses near Charlotte before joining Eastern Airlines. He remained with Eastern for 25 years before retiring in 1981.

He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth Rickles-Eatman of Sharpsburg, Ga.; daughters, Marie E. O'Hearn, Donna L. Mouriz and Janice A. Bearden; brothers, Harold L. Eatman and Ronnie Hudgins; sisters, Mildred McCall and Ruth Reynolds; two grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
