Former Letter Carrier Dies In Carroll

BLACK HAWK-Benjamin Franklin Clement, retired mail carrier and outstanding Carroll Countian died Tuesday at his home in Black Hawk. He was 77.

Services will be held in Black Hawk Methodist Church at 2:30, Wednesday afternoon. The Rev. Wilson Ray, the Rev. George Curtis and the Rev. B. F. Lewis will officiate. Burial will be in Coila Cemetery.

Clement, who was born in Coila in Carroll County, was the son of George Washington and Arena Jane Crew Clement. After attending college at Mississippi College and in Hattiesburg and Henderson, Tenn.. he taught school for five years. He was married on May 13, 1917 to Miss Alma carpenter, in 1917 they moved to Black Hawk, where he has been a leading citizen of community, county and state ever since. A mail carrier for 35 years, he retired in 1951.

He had been secretary to Woodmen of the World for 25 years. In 1958 he received a fifty year award for outstanding work as a Mason, an active member of the Methodist Church, which he joined at an early age, he had been a steward for fifty years.

Besides his wife, he leaves five daughters, Mrs. Roy L. Adams of Indianapolis, Indiana, Mrs. O. F. Potter of Wayside, Miss., Mrs. John Shute of Greenville, Mrs. George G. Randolph of Batesville, and Mrs. Hugh Carl McLellan of Durant.
