Charles Brown Petty, 88, 1455 Uintah,founder of Petty Motor Co., died Saturday of natura1 causes in a Salt Lake hospital. Mr. Petty was born Oct. 17. 1884, in Rockvi1e, Washington County, a son of Frank H. and Sarah Jane Brown Petty. He spent his early years in Washington County and was graduated from the University of Utah in 1907. On June 25, 1908 he married Maggie Cottam in the St. George LDS Temple. Mrs. Petty died July 28, 1972. After serving an LDS mission to England, he returned to Hurricane where he went into business with his father and became owner of a store,a drug store, a theater, an automobile agency and was vice president of the State Bank of Hurricane. He was instrumental in the conversion of Zion's Canyon into a national park.
Taught School
He taught school in Hurricane, was a member of the county 'board of education, was superintendent of schools, and was a state legislator from Washington County. He moved to Cedar City in 1927 where he operated a Ford agency and was a director of the Bank of Southern Utah. In 1936 he moved to Salt
Lake City where he established a Ford agency in Sugar House. His activities there included a 30-year membership in the Chamber of Commerce and membership on its highway committee. In 1936 he received a bronze plaque award from Ford Motor Co. recognizing 50 years of service as a Ford dealer.
Survivors Listed
He is survived by a son and three daughters, Neuman C. Mrs. Rachel P. Lunt. Mrs. Dilworth (Norma) Strasser, Mrs. Edwin (Leila) Shipp. All of Salt Lake City; 26 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday at noon in the Yale 2nd LDS Ward Chapel; 1421 Gilmer Dr. Friends may call at 2350 E. 13th South Monday from 7 to 9 p.m. and at the chapel Tuesday one hour prior to services. Burial will be in Sunset Lawn Cemetery.
