Newton Booth
Birth: Dec. 30, 1825
Salem
Washington County
Indiana, USA
Death: Jul. 14, 1892
Sacramento
Sacramento County
California, USA

California Governor, US Senator. He was born in the state of Indiana where he attended school, including Asbury University (later renamed DePauw University) and law school. In 1850, when just 25 years of age, he travelled to the newly-minted state of California where he made his fortune in the mercantile business, first as a grocer and later as a saloon keeper. He engaged in politics beginning in the 1860s and became the 11th Governor of California (1871-1875) and a U.S. Senator (1875-1881). After his stint in politics he returned to his mercantile interests in the city of Sacramento where he died in 1892. The "old Newton Booth place" in Sacramento became East Lawn Cemetery in 1904. (bio by: Valarie Vine)
