Joseph Robert “Bob” Herring, here after referred to as “Bob,” is a direct descendant of John Herring (1620-1672) and & Margerie Barron Whitfield (1616-1675). They are Bob's 5th great-grandparents.

As far as we know, John and Margerie were the first of the Herring family on the North American Continent. John emigrated from Britain to Isle of Wight, Virginia, British Colonies in 1642.

Bob’s grandparents, Joseph Herring (1795-1861) & Anna Wiggins (1805-1877), had 19 children and owned a wealthy plantation in Morgan County, Alabama before the start of the US Civil War. Their son Henry Tyler Herring (1841-1924) and his wife Eliza Jane Barclay (1841-1919), both also from Morgan County, Alabama, are Bob’s parents.

After the Civil War in about 1872, Henry Tyler Herring and his small family migrated from Alabama to Texas where Bob was born in Blue Ridge, Collin County, Texas. Bob is the fourth of six children born to Henry & Liza Herring and the first of two sons. Most likely he is also their second child born in Texas.

Bob married Margaret Elizabeth “Maggie” Pirtle (1883-1973), here after referred to as “Maggie.” Maggie was born in Beechgrove, Coffee County, Tennessee. Although their marriage license has not been discovered, we know from the US Census of 1900, taken in Precinct 4 of Falls County, Texas and enumerated on June 20, 1900, that the couple entered “0” for the number of years married on that date. Therefore we are assured they were married in 1899 or 1900. It is believed the marriage location was Lott, Falls County, Texas, because their first three children were born there.

Bob was a farmer by trade and a sharecropper in central Texas during the great depression. He and Maggie are the parents of the 11 children shown below.
