Catherine "Kate" Bailey was the daughter of Joseph L. Bailey and Margaret Tierney Bailey.

Margaret was an Irish immigrant who as a widow moved from Norwalk, CT to Denver about 1870. at age 35, she married Joseph, a widower aged 42 on Nov. 23, 1876 at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Denver by Rev. Nicholas Matz. After Kate's death and then Joseph's in 1904, she returned to Norwalk, CT where her family still lived, including her brother, the Rt. Rev Michael Tierney, D.D. who was the 6th Roman Catholic Bishop of Hartford. Margaret is buried in Saint Mary's Cemetery, Norwalk, CT.

Joseph L Bailey was born in Philadelphia in 1835. He desended from one of the oldest Maryland families. His great grand father was in the Revolutionary War. Joseph was taught in public schools and learned the carpentry trade from his father. He left home when 21 and headed west to St Louis not staying there long he then moved on to Kansas territory and finally on to Denver during the gold rush of 1859 making him a 59er and a Colorado Pioneer. He mined severel places but had no luck. He obtained a loan and purchased a meat business in Denver on credit with no money to his name and did quite well until the war was about to break out and a southern sympathizer stole all his money. He then became active as Street Commisioner, Marshal, Provost Marshal, Deputy United States Marshal and United States Treasury Departmant hunting down counterfitters. He was also Deputy Sheriff, and chosen for the City Council twice. He was Chief of the Denver Fire Department for 2 years. He owned The Bull Head Corral and handled the bulk of the hay that came into the Denver market. He was also an active organizer of the Colorado Cattle Growers Association.
