 BARNEY F. WILBERDING
Bernard F. (Barney) Wilberding of Seneca died early Sunday morning, August 24, 1958 at the Seneca hospital. He had not been in very good health for several years and had an operation recently.
Barney was born in the old country, at Damme, Oldenburg, Germany, on January 1 of 1883. He was a son of Henry and Agnes Steinemann Wilberding.
He was about 28 years of age when he came to this country in 1911. He worked in Michigan with a brother for a time before coming to Nemaha county. He was married on October 19, 1921 at St. Benedict to Dora Osterhaus. They farmed in Michigan for three years after their marriage, later returning to Nemaha county, and engaging here in farming. They have lived in Seneca the past 17 years.
Barney was custodian of the Seneca hospital for seven years. He had been custodian of the Citizens State Bank, Seneca for some 10 years.
Barney Wilberding was a good, warm hearted man. He was honest and hard-working, and now that most of the people of this area are second and third generation away from the old country, Barney was the happy "Dutchman" keeping some of his accent all his life, making jokes with people. Barney probably endeared himself to more people, and had more friends than most anyone in Seneca. He was thorough in his work and he liked flowers and gardens as well
as people; had what the gardeners call a green thumb. Besides his custodian work he did a lot of lawn mowing and similar work, and people often wanted him for more jobs than he could handle.
Typical of these good-hearted people, Mr. and Mrs. Wilberding, who did not have children of their own, raised a boy, Leo Schrader, from the time he was three. Leo is now at Stockton, California, and Leo and his brother, Frank were back to visit Barney during his last illness.
Besides his wife and Leo Schrader, Barney leaves two nieces and seven nephews, and many
friends.
Barney was a member of Sts. Peter and Paul church and of the St. Joseph Society.
Father Fidelis offered the requiem Mass at Sts. Peter and Paul church Tuesday morning, and Father Edward gave the sermon.
Burial was at Sts. Peter and Paul cemetery. The funeral arrangements were made by the Lauer Funeral Home. The pallbearers were Joe Strathman, Henry Rusche, Dan Dreiling, Mike
Kerns, Lawrence Dalinghaus and Dan Clements
