Monroeton Enterprise - April 29, 1916

Seneca L. Arnold, one of Towanda's oldest and best known citizens, passed away at his home on North Main street Saturday morning at 2 o'clock. He had been ill a long time, and death was due to a complications of diseases. Seneca L. Arnold was born in Warren township, this county, on February 10, 1837, a son of William and Debby Arnold, who were early settlers in Warren township, and where Seneca grew to manhood. He attended the common schools, and in early manhood began farming, and was thus engaged when the Civil War started. He promptly volunteered when Lincoln called for men, enlisting in the famous 141st Regiment, Pennsylvania Volunteers. He was in the service for about six months, participating in all the hard marches, seiges and battles in which the 141st played an important part. He was discharged from Fairfax hospital, near Fairfax Court House, Va., on account of disability, returning to his home to recuperate. Recovering his health he again enlisted in the army, this time in the 179th New York Volunteer Infantry, and served with this command six months, when he was honorably discharged on account of disability. The war having ended, Mr. Arnold located in Towanda, and established livery, boarding and sales stables, which he conducted successfully for many years, retiring on account of poor health. For several years he has lived retired. He was a member of Watkins Post, G. A. R., and for years was active in G. A. R. affairs. He was twice married, his first wife being Lydia E., a daughter of Jabez Sexton of Orwell township, and by her he had two children: Eugene and Emma, who married Lewis Fitch now deceased. His second wife was Elizabeth, daughter of William Booth of Forrest Lake, Susquehanna County, by which marriage there was one child. Nettie H. Arnold, who tenderly cared for the father, and who with her half-brother, Eugene Arnold of Powell, survive the father. Seneca L. Arnold was well and favorably known throughout this section and numbered his friends by the score. They will regret to learn that he is no more. The funeral was held at the family home Tuesday afternoon a 2 o'clock; Internment in Oak Hill Cemetery.
