Bio

Jacob Stiffler-Our subject settled in the county at his present home in 1825; he was born in York county, PA, February 14, 1800, and came from Bedford county, PA, to this county. He is married to Catherine Elizabeth Helsel. There was no road nearer him than the Douglass farm. He had no cabin, and built a pen of poles in which to keep his goods for a while. The wolves were plenty in the neighborhood then, and Sunday was the regular hunting day. Mr S. had to go twice to Blair county to get grinding done. His children were: Mary E., m.to Beuben Boring; George H., m to Mary Johnston; Peter, m. to Sophia Duncan; John, m. to Margaret Dishong; Joseph W.m. Sarah Hudso; William T., m. to Margaret Douglass; Philip H.,m to Rebecca Engle; Elizabeth, m. to David Piper; and Eve, d. The children are mostly settled near the old home. William T. served three years in the 78th Pennsylvania volunteers. Philip was in the signal corps. George H.had oneson in the war, badly wounded. Our subject helped to raise the first log schoolhouse at Cherry Tree. He thinks there never was any school in it, and it was never finished.

14 Nov 1895 - The Democrat, Indiana PA - STIFFLER. Jacob STIFFLER, was born in Strausburg, York county, Pa., on the 14th day of February, 1800. His parents were John and Elizabeth STIFFLER, who shortly after Jacob's birth removed to Bedford county where Jacob grew up and got his early education. In 1824 Jacob, with others, came to this section on a prospecting tour. Being pleased with the section, he returned in 1825, and having purchased a tract of some 300 acres on the hill above what is now Cherrytree, he proceeded to make a "clearing." In 1827 he brought his family here. Mr. STIFFLER was a hardworking man, a life long Democrat and a member of the Evangelical Church. Up to the time of his death he lived on the farm he literally chopped out of the wilderness three-fourths of a century ago, surrounded by his family who, with one or two exceptions, settled on subdivisions of the original tract. His wife, whose maiden name was Catharine Elizabeth HELSEL, and to whom he was married on April 17, 1821, died Jun 11, 1888, aged 85 years. His death occurred on Sunday last, November 3, 1895. His remains were interred in Stiffler cemetery at Uniontown on Tuesday.
