M. Virginia Raines, 85, of Red Creek died Sept. 5, 2009, in Elkins.

She was born Dec. 6, 1923, at Red Creek, the youngest daughter of the late French Harding and Mary Katherine Keister Raines. She is a descendant of well known Tucker County families. Her paternal grandparents were the late James R. and Martha Cooper Raines. Her maternal grandparents were the late Isaac and Sarah Roby Keister.

Also preceding her in death were one sister, Evelyn R. Cline, and her husband, Glen; one brother, Ralph J. Raines and his wife, Mary Alice; a brother-in-law, James Philip Cutright; and one niece, Nancy Cutright. Survivors include one sister, Dorothy Raines Cutright of Huntington, four nephews, L.A. Cline of Baltimore, Richard G. Cline of Red Creek, Roger D. Raines of Guyton, Ga., James K. Raines of Pittsburgh; two nieces, Linda Eddins and Sue Howland, both of Huntington; four great-nephews and five great-nieces. She is also survived by a cousin, Betty Keister Jones of Elkins who was raised by the Raines family.

Raines received her elementary education at Flanagan Hill School at Red Creek. She graduated from Davis High School with the class of 1940. In 1942, she graduated from the West Virginia Business College in Clarksburg. She lived in Clarksburg for 42 years where she was employed as a secretary at the Hart Brothers Machine Co. and J.C. Hart Foundry Inc. When she retired in 1982, she returned to the family farm at Red Creek where she resided until the time of her death. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Clarksburg and the Tucker County Senior Citizens.

Friends were received Monday at Hinkle Funeral Home in Davis. Funeral services will be held today at the Flanagan Hill United Methodist Church in Red Creek at 11 a.m. with the Rev. John Hedrick and Rev. Jim Martin officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to: Flanagan Hill United Methodist Church Cemetery Fund, c/o Rose Smith, PO Box 27, Red Creek, W.Va. 26289 or Canaan Valley Volunteer Department, PO Box 545 Davis, W.Va. 26260. Interment will follow in the Flanagan Hill Cemetery. Hinkle Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
