A Minnesota native, Josephine (known as "Sis" to her family), was the oldest of four children. The family moved to Sacramento County around 1920, where her father, Alfred, started a poultry farm. She lived with family into her early twenties, housekeeping and assisting with the farm.
She married Alf Sandstad (a son of Norwegian immigrants) on June 19, 1935 in Reno, Nevada. They settled in the Rio Linda area, for the next eight years, while Alf owned and operated his own poultry ranch as well. He passed away at the age of 48, and was interred in the Odd Fellows Lawn Cemetery.

She eventually remarried to Herman Heinrich (a son of Russian immigrants) sometime after 1947. They were married for many years, and resided in the Oak Park area of Sacramento. Josephine was in poor health in her later years. Herman placed her in a hospital bed in their living room, and cared for her for many years. He had a small grocery store adjacent to the house and would go back and forth to check on her.

She passed away in 1976 and was interred in the Odd Fellows Cemetery beside her first husband, Alf Sandstad.
